A check for $4,300 was delivered to LuAnn Maisner to cover the cost of items for the John Veenstra Memorial that is being incorporated into the all-new Marketplace on the Green. Many thanks to all who donated to the cause. John's legacy will forever be enshrined.

MTPD's new Police Chief
Our new Chief of Police Ken Plaga was officially sworn in on July 7,
2018. Chief Plaga was chosen out of a total of 31 applicants for the
position. He is replacing retiring Chief Dave Hall.

Our new Fire Chief Mike
Hamel was officially sworn in on the afternoon
of June 29, 2018.
Chief Hamel has already been
able to bring our township ISO rating
from 4 down to 3.

Meridian Police Offer a Senior Watch Program That Offers Assistance to Senior Citizens
MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, MI — The Meridian Township Police Department is
proud to offer a Senior Watch Program. This program was created to
assist senior citizens (60 years of age or older) or disabled adults
(55+ with a life-threatening illness or injury) who reside within the
community we serve. The program provides service to residents that live
alone with no means or capacity to leave their
home, or do not have friends or family immediately available to check
on their well-being. This program is intended to provide qualifying
residents with a sense of security as well as comfort in knowing that
assistance is coming should something happen.
HOW IT WORKS:
Interested participants should contact the Meridian Township Police
Department at 517-853-4800 or submit an application on the Meridian
Township Police website. The Program offers the following options:
~The Check-In Option: Senior citizens who may live alone, have the
opportunity to become part of our call-in program. They will decide on a
day and time that they will call or check in with the Police
Department. If a call is missed, then an officer will call them or stop
over to see if everything is okay. (Benefit of this program: client
doesn’t have to be home to call in.)
~The Elderly Call Option: On
designated days and times (usually Mondays 9:00 am – 12:00 pm), the
police department will call the client's home to check on their welfare.
Again, if no contact is made, an officer will be sent to the home to
check on their welfare.
~The Senior Watch Option: This option
benefits seniors who may need our help more than others. These seniors
may not have family to check on them or provide assistance. The Police
Department or a designated volunteer would visit the client once a week
(or more) to check on their welfare.
OUR VOLUNTEERS:
The
Meridian Township Police Department believes in a "neighbor helping
neighbor" concept and that's why the Meridian Police Senior Watch
Program calls for neighborhood volunteers to assist with our programs.
The volunteers can sign on to help us help our seniors. Through our
volunteers, we will strengthen our relationships between neighbors and
neighborhoods. Volunteers interested in assisting can contact our
Department or submit an application on the Meridian Township Police
website.

Car Break-ins
MTPD
reports that 99% of the many car break-ins in the last few months happen
to UNLOCKED cars left outside. Make sure you always lock your vehicle
before leaving it.

Meridian Township Farmers’ Market
Held all
winter at the Meridian Mall in the JC Penney Corridor.
Approximately 25-30 vendors participate each market day.
The indoor market closes end of April, and the Spring outdoor market held at the Pavilion starts in the beginning of May.

LINC Donates $3,000 to New Farmers' Market
The new project has transformed the Farmers’ Market into a social and economic centerpiece in Meridian Township, providing community space for the Farmers' Market, craft fairs, Township events, adult and youth sports, live music, and more.

2019 Deer Management Program Begins
Oct. 1, 2019
Although this disease cannot be transmitted to humans, it can
spread rapidly through the deer population leading to widespread
infection. The most reliable method of control is to reduce the local deer population. Property owners in the
township are encouraged to participate in the effort by allowing the DNR to access their property in order to cull the herd in a humane manner.

If you see a dead deer on or near a roadway, call MI DNR at 517-614-9602 to remove it.
If a dead deer is blocking a roadway, ICRD will
move it, but not remove it. Call 517-676-9722.
